Special Program Opportunities
Full Grants / English Teaching Assistantships
Most grants offered in the U.S. Student Program are Full grants. This includes all study and research awards, as well as English Teaching Assistantships. Full grants include: - Round-trip transportation to the host country
- Maintenance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country
- Book and research allowance*
- Medical Insurance
- Mid-term enrichment activities in many countries or world regions
- Full or partial tuition, in most cases (see relevant Country Summary for details)
- Language or orientation programs, in some cases (see relevant Country Summary for details)
*These grants provide some funding for research, books, and/or supplies. Grantees with projects that require extensive research support, in-country travel, study materials, or equipment should explore additional funding from other sources to supplement the Fulbright funding. Travel Grants
Travel only grants are available in a limited number of countries (check the Country Summaries) to supplement: - an award from any source that does not provide for international travel
- a student’s own funds for study or research

Fulbright Business Grants Special Fulbright business opportunities are offered in: Mexico: 10 Binational Business Grants to enhance knowledge, expertise, and understanding of post-NAFTA Mexico. These combine course work in international business or law with an internship at a Mexico-based company. Advanced level Spanish language required for grant. Spain: 3 International MBA Grants for full-time study in a one-year program at the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid, plus elective seminars and a three-month assessed internship. Bilingual program, so only Basic Spanish language skills required at time of application. See the Spain country summary for details.
Fulbright Journalism Grants
Special Fulbright journalism opportunities are offered in: Germany: 5 Professional Journalism Awards for beginning professional journalists or recent graduates in journalism or related fields to conduct independent research and serve as interns or guest journalists at newspapers, publishers or television and radio stations in Germany. Solid proficiency in German commensurate with the project is required. See the Germany country summary for details. UK: 1 Alistair Cooke Award in Journalism for a candidate to pursue the first year of a graduate-level program in Journalism in the UK. There is a possibility of an internship with the BBC for the successful candidate. The award is open to candidates at all degree levels. See the UK country summary for details.
Fulbright Critical Language Enhancement Award
The Critical Language Enhancement Award provides an opportunity for Fulbright U.S. Student Program grantees to receive three to six months of intensive language study in addition to their research or study grants. The award provides a monthly living stipend and tuition reimbursement for grantees to pursue language training in the host country. Approximately 150 awards will be available for 2009-2010 Fulbright U.S. Student Program grantees. Only select languages and host-countries are available for this opportunity.
The requirements of the grant include a minimum of 20 hours per week of classroom study or 10 hours of tutoring in-country; pre- and post-study language testing; and a commitment to study the language beyond the Critical Language Enhancement Award - period. For most countries it is required that the language training occur in the Fulbright host country.
Application for a Critical Language Enhancement Award is made in conjunction with the Fulbright U.S. Student application and reference to the language award application should be included in the project proposal and a study plan presented.
