GRANT AWARD BENEFITS



Full Grant Award Benefits

  • Full Grant benefits for Study/Research and English Teaching Assistantships include:
  • Round-trip transportation to the host country
  • Maintenance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country
  • Limited Health Benefits
  • In addition, Full Grants may include (see relevant Country Summary for details):
  • Book and research allowances*
  • Mid-term enrichment activities in many countries or world regions
  • Full or partial tuition
  • Language study programs
  • Pre-departure and in-country orientation

*The allowance provides some funding for research, books, and/or supplies. Grantees with projects that require extensive research support, in-country travel, study materials, or equipment should explore additional funding from other sources to supplement the Fulbright funding.

  • Benefits for Study/Research grants and English Teaching Assistantships—
  • Are based on the cost of living in the host country
  • May be paid in host country currency to grantees in countries with a Commission/Foundation
  • Will be paid in U.S. dollars to grantees in countries without a Fulbright Commission/Foundation


Dependents

In some countries/world regions, a modest dependent’s allowance is made available.
  • Transportation and insurance are not provided for dependents
  • Grantees who plan to take dependents must, as a condition of the grant, submit a statement of their ability to finance transportation and, if necessary, maintenance support for them
  • Dependent’s allowance is not provided for any adult dependent who holds a grant from any source
  • Within Fulbright, a dependent:
    • is a spouse, child, parent or sibling who is financially dependent on the grantee
    • must accompany the grantee abroad for at least 80% of the grant period in order to receive the dependent benefit
 

Other Funds

If awarded a Fulbright Grant, you are required to report all funds received from other sources.

  • Scholarships, Fellowships or grants in dollars or foreign currencies received concurrently with a Fulbright grant that duplicate Fulbright benefits will be deducted.
  • Non-duplicative funds are permitted.
  • Grantees may not accept remunerative work abroad during the grant period without prior approval of the supervising agency in the host country and/or IIE.

Travel-Only Grant Benefits
  • Travel-Only grants are available in Italy, Germany and Hungary and are designed to supplement:
  • an award from any source that does not provide for international travel
  • a student’s own funds for study or research
  • Travel-Only grants include:
  • Round-trip international travel to the host country
  • Limited Health Benefits
  • Mid-term enrichment activities, if available in the host country
  • Language or orientation programs, if available in the host country
