United States citizens who are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are eligible to apply. All applicants enrolled in U.S institutions must apply through their home campuses. Find the Fulbright Program Adviser on your campus.

If you are an undergraduate student, you are eligible to apply in the fall of your senior year.  If you are a graduate student, you are eligible as long as you will not have a PhD degree by the application deadline.

U.S. Citizen but not a Student

If you are a U.S. citizen, hold a bachelor’s degree, and do not have a PhD degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicant should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 5 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

If you are a U.S. citizen and a professor at a U.S. institution and are interested in applying for a Fulbright Scholar Award, you will need to apply through CIES.

Non U.S. Citizens

The Welsh Government, Global Wales partners, and the Welsh universities have partnered with the Fulbright Commission to provide one short-term (six-month) scholarship for a visiting PhD student to carry out research at one of the participating Welsh universities, in any field.

The Welsh universities offer a world-class education in one of the most stunning locations. Wales is known for its friendly welcome, its affordability, its independent spirit, and its tradition of academic excellence.

Top scholars currently studying for their PhD in the US are welcome to apply to the Global Wales visiting student award. It is a central award to any of the Welsh universities listed, but the applicant should specify the proposed research subject, and proposed university.

Grant amount

  • £6,725 living stipend

Bench fees/tuition funding are to be paid by the student for applicable courses.

The stipend is intended as a contribution towards general maintenance costs during the research period.

The Commission is seeking applicants who demonstrate:

  • Strong reasons for wishing to pursue the proposed project in the UK and at a particular institution
  • A desire to gain a better understanding of the peoples and cultures of their host country
  • Commitment to the community through volunteer and extra-curricular activities
  • Flexibility and dynamism necessary for active involvement in the host country

Applicants are responsible for arranging their own affiliation and must apply for visiting researcher status according to the relevant university’s admissions procedures. Applicants are expected to have a letter of affiliation at time of application from their proposed research supervisor/host.

The following applicants are ineligible for consideration: applicants who are currently resident in or who have extensive previous experience in the UK; and applicants whose proposals are to complete any part of a medical degree, including internships or residencies.
